The newest iPhone from Apple is truly a blazing smartphone. However aesthetically, it is hard to differentiate when looking from the front for the new iPhone 12. Still it would be amiss if we forget how much technology Apple has crammed into this 5 inch slab this year which is the important part.
The iPhone has always been an icon, love it or hate it, and every release either delights fans or aggravates them. I believe the expectations every year are pretty high and customers demand a certain level of excellence for the high prices they pay, especially for the Pro versions.
Using the iPhone 12
This year (as with every other year really) the one thing that that blows me away is the speed. The Apple A14 chip, a 64 bit six-core CPU is blazing. ‘Throw an app I dare you’ it says to me as I scroll around the iOS looking for a challenge. Nope, not a single app stutters. Even without a 120Hz screen, the iPhone 12 is as smooth as always due to this chip, custom processing, and iOS all humming in harmony. I mean the chip has increased it’s transistor count to 11.8 billion operations per second from 8.5 billion on the A13 chip. Talk about growth! Of course this sort of powerhouse is what eventually brought us the amazing M1 chip. Even after a month, this chip is a beast.
On the outside however not much has changed. The rear side of the phone seems to be the hallmark of change for the iPhones throughout the years. And with all those changes, we have much more powerful cameras each year.
When I use the iPhone 12 there are a few things I don’t understand. I mean I do, but my question is why? Like why didn’t they include more than 64GB for change as the base storage design? Whatever the reason may be, I wish it had at least 128GB baseline for users. With all the photography being represented in this phone, it makes sense that 64GB feels paltry once you start taking pictures and videos. I have already reached about 90% limit on my phone. Also I can sense that Apple could have surely gotten a 120Hz screen in there but perhaps the battery would take a noticeable hit. And that sort of omission is fine by me. I do understand the importance of battery life in sacrifice of smoothness, but perhaps 90Hz would have sufficed. We shall see next year. So far everything feels fast, but I feel like other 120Hz phones feel smoother now.
Either way, this phone does not lag. As mentioned, the incredibly powerful chip and optimized OS does not allow it to. Using it is a pure pleasure and I can go about my day without having to worry about freezes and stutters.
iPhone 12 Battery Life
In almost every angle, this phone is a pleasure to look at as well. The straight lines which distance itself from its competing Galaxy phones has an industrial look to it that I have missed. I think this phone is handsome and I can’t wait to see if the rumors of the next Galaxy flagship phones to have flat screens are true as well. It might be actually my favorite guilty pleasure of an iPhone. That flat screen. And with vibrant color perfect calibration of the display, what’s not to like? All else is pretty standard. It feels and acts like an iPhone and even the battery life is amazing if you stick with iPhone 12 and above. Expect all day battery life from the iPhone 12 and no worries by 9pm. That 2815mAh is a wonder, especially seeing that other phones all have over 3000mAh battery sizes and that shows how mighty the A14 chip is again with humble draw. It just lasts. Even now after setting up my phone and using it for a month, the battery is fine. Need to finally charge? Well for that one, I hope you have a cable lying around from your previous iPhones as this year, the charger doesn’t come together. Hence the slim box.
Conclusion
Every year like clockwork Apple releases an important product to the public and that is the iPhone. Every year, we anticipate what has changed and what has not and it seems every year the sales shoot through the roof anyway showing that customers are voting with their money. It’s really hard to fault the iPhone for anything these days and the minor things I mentioned are really that, minor. It basically comes down to, do you like the ecosystem of Apple or do you prefer a different one. Once you have that figured out, buying an iPhone is a no brainer. If you already have the iPhone 11, we don’t see an urgent reason to switch. However if the promise of that speedy A14 chip, the new design language of the phone, and its’ wonderful camera capabilities are tugging at your heart, go right ahead and get that new iPhone 12. Oh, but don’t forget to keep your old charger.
